Signs of Hyperactive Behavior in Children and What to Do About Them

Whether your child studies in an international school in Manila or elsewhere, hyperactivity in children may affect their behavior at home or their performance in school. Due to a child’s playful nature, their energy levels may always seem too much, but this is normal in most circumstances. Here are the signs of a hyperactive child and tips on what to do:

Signs of Hyperactivity in Children

High energy levels in children will always be a trait that can’t be taken away from them. You can expect them to almost always run around and be talkative. This is normal. But there are some cases wherein their level of activity goes beyond the norm. If your child displays inattentiveness, difficulty concentrating alongside jumpiness, fidgeting, excessive movement, and excessive talking, these may be signs of hyperactivity.

Hyperactivity in children may be linked to ADHD or ADD, both of which are neurological conditions that lead to children having difficulty focusing and unable to control their impulses. This behavior may interfere with both their lives at home and at school. Luckily, there are various ways in order to deal with hyperactive children.

How to Handle Hyperactive Children

Hyperactivity is related to the brain, an effective way to guide hyperactive children is to help them relax and take things one at a time. Teaching them to follow sequences and allowing them time to pay attention to details will entail better focus and channeled energy towards taking activities one step at a time. Here are a few tips that can help you handle your hyperactive child better:

Enroll them in Sports

Enrolling your children in any kind of sport is a great way for them to channel their energy, build confidence, and enhance their physical wellness as well as concentration. In any type of sport, discipline is paramount. Children can learn how to control their energy and direct it towards their sport.

For almost all sports, there’s little to no standing around and idle time. This allows them to constantly move around and stay focused on their goal. Sports also teach them the value of teamwork, sportsmanship, and the nature of competition.

Establish Order at Home

It’s important to establish order in your home and set certain rules in order for your hyperactive child to learn from patterns and routines. This not only applies to families with a hyperactive child but for every parent.

Setting a time for meals, homework, play, and sleep can help prevent your child’s mind from scattering and aid them in terms of learning direction and structure. Rules in your home will establish order for your children and instill discipline. In the long run, they will learn how to control their impulses and their use of energy.

Minimize Distractions

Reducing distractions in your home can help create and induce an inviting study space. You can start by rearranging your child’s seating and desk to a location in your home that is away from doors or windows. As much as possible, keep him away from any electronic gadgets and television because their attention may be turned to these.

It’s also important to try and avoid restraining him to his seat because this may lead to restlessness. If he asks for help, never hesitate to guide him until he fully understands what he is reviewing.

Key Takeaway

Whether your child studies in an international school in Manila or elsewhere, you can help him channel his energy into positive outputs. Hyperactivity in children can be managed with patience, redirection of their energy, and the right parenting techniques. If your child displays any worrying signs of hyperactivity, simply take a step back and try these tips.
