Leadership is an important trait and skill that is often linked to success. Sending your child to an international school in the Philippines is often a great way to cultivate success, but you shouldn’t stop there.

As a parent, you are equally responsible for the character development of your child. Whether it’s at home or outside in the real world, there are many ways to nurture leadership qualities in your child that can potentially dictate success in different facets of his life. Read on to find out how you can do that.

Develop decision-making skills

At the core of leadership is the ability to make decisions. In relation to that, another important quality that any respectable leader would have is a deep sense of responsibility. When someone makes a decision, it almost always affects other people. What this means is that the best leaders always put other people into consideration before deciding on a course of action.

To help instill this kind of mentality in your child, delegate to him some decisions that can affect other people in small ways. For example, you can let your child decide what to do or where to eat for family lunch on Sundays. If you plan on making small renovations to your home, ask him to choose what kind of pattern the wallpaper or the color of his room should be.

While it might seem mundane, this kind of training reinforces in your child that his decisions can affect people other than himself — making him more empathetic and decisive.

Do problem-solving exercises with your child

Another way to nurture leadership in your child is by doing problem-solving exercises with him. This can come in the form of solving minor real-life concerns that involve friends and family.

Whatever the problem may be, the important part is teaching your child how to solve any problem in a non-arbitrary manner. This means teaching and introducing concrete steps to solve problems. These strategies can include brainstorming, thinking out loud, and the SODAS method.

When your child becomes better at solving problems and learns how to approach difficult tasks with a strategy in mind, he will naturally apply these leadership skills among his peers, especially in group tasks.

Key Takeaway

Being a role model is always key in developing any trait or quality in your child. Instilling confident decision-making and effective problem-solving skills ensures that he is well-equipped and prepared to become a future leader.
